Devils, as far as this page is concerned, are supernatural creatures native to and intricately connected with the Nine Hells of Baator.

Devils have a rigid hierarchy, however, due to the nature of infernal politics, it is hard for many mortals to keep up with them.

Baatezu are a race of devils that rule the Nine Hells. Not all devils are Baatezu, but a good majority of them are. Devils have a rigid society, with the various devils assigned to a status based on their type. Rarely, a devil of a particular type proves it can be elevated to a higher status and remain their original type. Usually, when a devil proves itself worthy, it is promoted to a better type. The rare circumstances surrounding a devil that is elevated without promotion is always in the case of a non-Baatezu devil.
