HISTORY OF MEPHISTOPHELES

Mephisto became engaged to the lover of one of his former soldiers, then manipulated the demon into slaying his lover. The demon became Darklove cursed to always perform the opposite of love. 

Mephisto entered into a rivarly with Zarathos and struck a bargain with Centurious the Souless Man. Together they brought down Zarathos and Mephisto began the long process of tormenting Zarathos by bonding him to mortals. Knowing Zarathos was tied to the Spirits of Vengence, Mephisto became obsessed with obtaining the Medallion of Power, a mystic talisman housing the essences of the spirits. This led Mephisto to the Kale family who bore shards of the medallion within their souls. In the 18th Century Mephisto bargained with the overzealous madman Pastor Kale hoping to gain the soul of the Pastor's son, Noble. This was the creation of the first Ghost Rider and to this day a Ghost Rider still exists. 

Throughout history Mephisto has exploited the spiritually adrift. In Europe he granted a group of mystics (the future Mys-Tech) immortality in exchange for a yearly quota of souls. He also corrupted sea captain Joost van Straaten, who became the infamous Flying Dutchman. Benedicto de vica Severtes once dealt with Mephisto to gain the love of Beatriz and prevented Mephisto from claiming his soul by encasing himself in mystic armour and becoming the Brass Bishop. Mephisto duped a group of German scientests into believing in the Vril a perfect race of that had allegedly ruled Earth before the age of man and had relocated to an extradimensional realm. These scientests developed a portal to the Vril, though their project was shut down at war's end. 

In recent years Mephisto has become interested in Earths super beings and has particularily coveted the pure soul of the Silver Surfer. Mephisto tried to tempt the earth bound Surfer with power and physical pleasure even offering up the Surfer's beloved Shalla-Bal but the Surfer resisted. Undeterred by this failure Mephisto has repeatedly threatened the Surfer, Thor, Daredevil and many other heroes. He sent the ghostly Flying Dutchman against the Surfer but the Dutchman renounced Mephisto. Claiming John Blaze's soul he turned him into the new Ghost Rider. 

Mephisto's power over the soul of Doctor Doom's mother led him into several conflicts with the Latverian monarch battling each other annually on Halloween. Allied with the Six Fingered Hand Mephisto tried to bring about Hell on Earth but the Defenders thwarted the attempt. After Thor freed souls from his domain Mephisto attempted to slay the mortal form of Thor, Donald Blake employing the deceased villain Darkoth against him. But Darkoth worked with Thor to attack Mephisto instead. Mephisto has menaced the Fantastic Four on several occasions and had gained power from the Dire Wraiths who were invading Earth at the time. Mephisto was severly weakened when he was attacked by Franklin Richards and had to retrieve his lost essences. Mephisto hired Master Pandemonium into reclaiming these essences which resulted in the death of the Scarlet Witch's twin sons whom she had mystically created by trapping Mephisto's lost fragments unknowingly. 

A rivalry with Hela caused Mephisto to manipulate Thor into attacking her forever making Hela an enemy to Thor. When the Beyonder came to Earth Mephisto attempted to sway him by offering his own warped view on mortals. Mephisto interfered in the affairs of Galactus and caused a cosmos shaking battle between the two that left the Hell lord badly beaten. More failed attempts at gaining the Medallion of Power followed and Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom succeeded in claiming Doom's mothers soul sending her to Heaven. Later Mephisto served for a time as advisor to Thanos who had in his posession the Infinity Gems. He also played a role subsequently in the Infinity War against the Magus. 

German scientests finally opened a gate to the Vril only to discover it opened the ways for Mephisto's armies to once again try to invade Earth this was thwarted by Cloak and Dagger, Spider Man and Ghost Rider. (Dan Ketch)  Mephisto once stole the soul of Odin while he was in Odinsleep and Loki posessed Odin's form but Odin ultimatley reclaimed his body and Mephisto took Loki's soul his true goal all along. After months in Hell Loki's spirit eventually escaped.  Mephisto ruthlessly murdered Avengers member Mockingbird (although it was later revealed to be a Skrull) after the Avengers interfered in Mephisto's battle with Satannish over the souls of the Lethal Legion. 

Mephisto set about and bore two children Blackheart and Mephista. Mephisto tried to teach Blackheart the ways of Hell but Blackhearts ambition led them apart for a time. Blackheart temporarily took over Mephisto's realm but then lost it to Noble Kale who then lost it to Mephisto again. He was thwarted when he tried to claim the soul of the Black Panther when he was overwhelmed by the souls of all the Black Panthers within history.  During the Adversary's attack on the Splinter Realms, Mephisto and his forces worked together to battle the computer incarnation (Known as Archenemy) of the ancient evil. 

During the Hellswar Mephisto joined with his once enemies Hel, Satannish, and Blackheart in a attempt to establish a power base in the civil war that threatned the stability of Hell. 

Mephisto appeared to several heroes in the Kingdom of Marvels as a man working for Marvel Comics who wanted to make a comic out of them. When they refused his bargain he attacked them, and was defeated. It was later determined that Mephisto was testing them for he was aware that they had a large part to play in events ahead. He further tested them by having them go up against the two bit super villain the Torturer.
